Boa Vista meaning good view in Portuguese is a desert island in the Barlaventos islands of Cape Verde and is the most eastern of all the islands. Boa Vista’s main industry was agriculture, but as the land became more dry and desert like it led to salt and this took over as the main industry on Boa Vista. Today’s main industries are tourism and date farming which can be found in oases of date palms. Boa Vista’s land area is 620 km² which makes it the third largest island after Santo Antão and Santiago. The tallest part on Boa Vista is the peak of Monte Estancia which measures at 387 meters. A large proportion of the population of Boa Vista live in the capital, but there are many small settlements around the island, with 10 to 50 people each while others are abandoned. Boa Vista has the smallest population of all Cape Verde's islands, except the uninhabited islands.
Boa Vista is well known for the population of marine turtles and traditional Cape Verde music, and also the ultramarathon, impressive sand dunes and wonderful beaches. The main town on Boa Vista is Sal Rei, and it has an active ferry port and airport. Sal Rei is found on the northwest side of the island.
